Mosaic Community Church’s story began long before its 2015 planting in Nelson. It traces back to Phil and Liz Cooper’ s encounter with a grace-filled, bible-inspired, community-minded church in Palmerston North. After a brief stop in Christchurch, they embarked on an overseas experience in London, where they connected with Ken and Carol Shelley and the Newfrontiers family of churches.

In London, they found another church emphasising grace, the word, and community, which deeply resonated with them. In 2001, they returned to Christchurch with Ken, Carol, and a team to plant a Newfrontiers church called King’s Church, where Phil eventually became an elder and full-time pastor. During their time in Christchurch, Phil and Liz developed a burden for Nelson and sought God’s guidance to start a church there.

Joining forces with Josh and Karen Shelley, they established Mosaic Community Church, 13 years after King Church’s inception.

Initially, we met in homes across Nelson, then at Nayland Primary School, and now we hold our Sunday services at the Habitat Hub in Tāhunanui. Being part of the development and success of the Habitat Hub, Mosaic Is now led by Matt Walters, working with the original church planters, and the wider leadership team we see lives being transformed through the love of Jesus Christ.
